DASH-IF Conformance Tool 3.1 - Dealing with complexity

By Romain Bouqueau, Founder of Motion Spell

Introduction

Each of the Conformance Tool's release brings me joy and a sense of accomplishment. It counter-balances the continuous evolution and increasing complexity of the streaming media landscape.

Each time you have a technical issue with a video stream, you can go to conformance.dashif.org for guidance and troubleshooting.

Innovation stacks up. Complexity grows. But our capacity to handle it stagnates.

People may argue that AI can help manage this complexity, but it is no silver bullet. Human expertise and well-designed tools will remain essential.

What's new in version 3?

In 2022, Motion Spell and Fraunhofer FOKUS collaborated closely to enhance the DASH-IF Conformance Tool in an initiative called JCCP. JCCP has clearly put the tool on track again.

However, conformance is never a one-time effort. At MWS 2022, I presented (pdf) our vision of where awareness was needed:

  1. The editor needs to annotate the specification with checks.
  2. Test material needs to be created - most of the time crafted manually as there is a chicken-and-egg problem with what's new!.
  3. A reference implementation: it can be a player, a packager, etc. depending on community needs.
  4. A conformance checker that fosters interoperability.

Version 3 brought the ease of use. Version 3.1 fixes a lot of little issues that had accumulated over time, either bugs, minor pending improvements, and performance optimizations.

The tool is now dynamic and provides more value to its users:

What's next?

Aggregation, AI, and a revival of the test and conformance activity are needed. The conformance tool will continue to evolve to become the one place to address these challenges.

Of course we'd like to thank our sponsors for 2025 and 2026: DVB and CTA. Erik Zandvliet is the main developer and I'd like to thank him for his outstanding contributions since 2022.
